Revised Grant Application Draft

Project Title:
hoofbeats! (radio+)

Applicant Description
The person accountable for the project, including management, and overseeing reporting and communications has the ability to enter into a contractual agreement.

Applicant Background
hoofbeats! (radio+) has operated as a radio volunteer collective from Aug 2007- March 2009, and again May 2011-August 2011.  

The goals of the project are to bring equestrian experience to all Canadians, regardless of economic background.  The proposed shows also attract international horse enthusiasts to the listenership and create an interest in Ontario-based equestrian facilities.   OEF members, recreational riders and wanna-be's, benefit from listening to such entertaining and educational horse talk radio shows.  Select contributors even benefit from researching and contributing audio segments for broadcast, or using the opportunity to spread their own equine news! 

Proposed activities include broadcasting the fully produced programs on various stations across the NCRA network, targeting first CFRU then CHES, to promote new equine enthusiasm, educate existing equestrians and entertain.  The hoofbeats radio club will also continue to maintain a blog, shoot video and take photographs etc.  Note that funds will support education of recreational riders, and thereby be of benefit to their horses.

Objectives
The club operates with the leadership of a certified instructor and experienced, award winning equestrian journalist , to produce and organize 1hour weekly radio show content.  While recruiting and supporting volunteers, the club broadcasts balanced, well researched and entertaining shows.   The club educates recreational riders and owners about all facets of horsemanship, from horse health care to training/handling to environmental farm management, through entertaining and well researched interviews and reports.  This project also reaches out to wanna-bes, enthusiasts, and those who are not as active with hand on horse time as they wish to be!

The concrete results of this project will consists of 12 hours of rebroadcastable audio.  
Proposed Activity 
Continue to operate as a collective to bring equestrian experience to all Canadians via weekly radio shows, broadcast over the airwaves and also available on the CFRU archive.

Driving with the World's Best (behind the scenes with Chester Weber, TBD)
Saddle Club horsemanship training for young enthusiasts (from Old Orchard)
Lecture Series Excerpts - EC Rider Level Theory (from Myrddin and Old Orchard)
Trail Rides, Natural Horsemanship, Farm Tours (various)
"Home is Where My Horse Is" (interview with country music icon Lyle Lovett? request pending)
Work Horse Movement Organic Farming Focus (via Farm-Start, various)
Fiction Excerpts from Horse Power Editor and others  (various)
also activities to maximize impact of

Performance Evaluation
Show Evaluations, Submissions, Listener Calls, Letters, Guest Comments, Facebook/Blog Comments as well as obtaining stats re: # of downloads will also be explored.

Support/sponsorship of these programs can also be expected to drive OEF memberships and create new horse enthusiasts and recreational participants, which can be measured by observation.

Previous & Ongoing Contribution Sources

We estimate that club members have incurred in excess of $12,000 in expenses to date in volunteer contributions of use of start up equipment, cash towards expenses and & 75 shows with 5 hours per producer/contributor/reporter work, calculated at even a minimal salary expense is in excess of $10,000 donated labour to date.  

Column Reporters and Interview Guests have and can continue to contribute additional support, via use of internet, phone, print ink, paper, computer equipment, audio equipment.  Tech volunteers and the NCRA network has provided in kind support via training and orientation programs as well as use of On-air and production studio equipment.  Also covered are expenses such as CRTC listening, web hosting of podcasts on archive etc.

Total Cost of Project
The value of the weekly radio shows are estimated at $10,000 per quarter, including value of donated services (ongoing, in excess of aforesaid start up costs and ongoing additional volunteer contributions).  Increased club bank fees, phone, internet and travel expenses to obtain interview exclusives loom on the horizon...

Detailed Budget Overview:
Expected expenses including mileage to Old Orchard (a Hunter/Jumper focused farm) and intended to  include carpools with reporters from University of Guelph Equestrian Team, Guelph Pony Club etc. Also included in the weekly expense target is mileage to Myrddin (an Eventing focused Equestrian Facility in Erin) & 88.1
